Requirements

Emergency lighting is a statutory requirement for all commercial businesses. According to the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRO), it is a requirement to provide emergency lighting in non-domestic buildings and in the common areas of a House of Multiple Occupancy to illuminate emergency exits and escape routes in case of a lighting failure.

Emergency exit lights are required to illuminate the escape routes in the event of a power failure. If you are the responsible person in your organisation, count on ABC Fire & Safety to ensure you are fully compliant and help you keep your employees or occupants safe.

Types of Lighting

There are two types of emergency exit lighting: maintained and non-maintained. Emergency lighting is a legal requirement and is required to meet BS5266-1. It covers different areas within your building.

Maintained Systems

A maintained lighting system remains on permanently, with a dual purpose as standard lighting that will stay on in the event of a power failure. Generally used in public places, this type of lighting system is suitable for shopping centres, theatres, and cinemas.

Non-Maintained Systems

A non-maintained lighting system operates as emergency lighting. Linked to the building’s lighting circuits, it will activate in response to a power failure. Non-maintained systems are often used in workplaces, offices, and factories, and installed to highlight the emergency evacuation route.
